Ultimate Route

THE WORKSHOP

Business Challenge

One of the key reasons many projects over over time, over budget, or fail to deliver the right results is because of poor risk management.  Failing to adequately manage project risks can cause lost revenue, poor market image, as well as impact business continuity.

Are your project risks well managed? If not can you afford to take the RISK that poor risk management poses to YOUR organization?

Solution

Ultimate RouteTM is a Project Risk Management Simulation. From 1 to 3 teams can participate in this interactive workshop (including simultaneous competitive running between the teams). Each team consists of 5 to 10 participants. During the Simulation each team must construct a road connecting two points while proactively managing project risks. At the start of the simulation each team decides what to build and how to build (Scope planning). These decisions bring opportunities and threats during the construction process

learning objectives

  • Understanding of project risk management
  • Understanding of risks as opportunities and as threats
  • Understanding of the risk response planning process
  • Understanding the relationship between risk and scope management
  • Discover the role of risk management for project success
  • Discover the relationship between risk and change management

TARGET AUDIENCE

The simulation addresses cross-industry issues of risk management in projects. The simulation may be effectively used by the following categories of participants, who are challenged with scoe and risk management issues and consequences in theor everyday work:

    • Project team members
    • Project Managers and Team Leaders
    • Business executives
    • Business Analysts
    • Risk Managers

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

The Simulation comprises of 3 phases. During the Simulation participants have to construct a road between two points, while proactively managing scope and project risks.

Phase one is devoted to project scope management. The task for the team(s) is to define the project scope and to approve it with the Customer. There are 5 different route options and a number of project scope descriptions to choose from.

Phases 2 and 3 are devoted to project risk management. The task is for the team(s) is to prioritize the risks, flag the most critical ones and select appropriate counter measures, taking into account  limited project resources and the dynamics of the ongoing project environment.

There are 5 reflection breaks during the Simulation, which are targeted at the teams project status review, identifying lessons learned and deciding on improvements that need to be carried out. Following each break the Simulation complexity increases offering new learning opportunities and the chance to test the teams improvements. These breaks provide the participants with the chance to analyze their experience and improve their risk management skills to achieve the project goal. Through 2007 more than 85% of IT operations organizations will be involved in IT operational process, Quality and governance initiatives.

          Anticipated results

Following completion of the Simulation participants will have learnt and be able to use the following skills and methods:

          • Learnt to recognize and apply the key processes of project Risk Management, and how to realize them in practice.
          • Understand how the key risk management strategies differ from each other, what the specific traits are of each strategy and the optimal way of selecting and using each strategy on the project.
          • Recognized and experienced the importance of negotiation and communication required to manage risks effectively.
          • Learnt to analyze the risk management system they built and improve it to achieve greater results. At the end of the Simulation, participants will be able to come up with an improvement action list for their own company’ risk management.
          • Learnt to determine which parts of project scope are critical for risk management; and will have seen and experienced the impact of poor scope management for project success.
          • Recognized the benefits of effective risk management for achieving the overall project goal and securing project success.
          • Understand the relationship between project changes and risks, and how to approach project change decisions from a perspective of risk management.
          • Identified new skills and knowledge that can be effectively transferred into their own working environment.
